The Senate approves on third and final reading a bill that will impose stiffer penalties on motorists who are caught under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The author of Anti-drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2012 Senator Gregorio Honasan said the implementation of the bill will lessen the number of accidents related to drunk driving.
Honasan said DUI resulting in physical injuries shall be fined from P100,000 to P200,000 and face imprisonment ranging from three months to 12 years depending on the injury caused while DUI leading to homicide shall be fined from P300,000 to P500,000 or jailtime from 12 years to 20 years.
Violators with Non-professional driver's license will also be confiscated and suspended for 12 months for the first conviction and perpetually revoked on the second conviction.
Meantime, drivers involved in accidents resulting in injury or death will have to undergo mandatory alcohol and drug testing.
