MMDA: Proposed Liquor Ban Is Double-Purpose
By:
Posted : 1/16/2013
After the gun ban took effect last Sunday, one government agency files a petition to extend another ban with an aim to maintain safety, peace and order until election day.

The Metro Manila Development Authority or the MMDA asked the Commission on Elections or Comelec yesterday to expand the liquor ban during the election period from only two days to 45 days. In his letter to the poll body, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the prolonged liquor ban will help lessen alcohol-related violence especially in areas with heated political rivalries and lessen the number of road accidents caused by drunk driving. Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said the commission en banc will consider the matter, but thinks the proposed 45 day ban is way too long. The Omnibus Election Code states that it is prohibited for any person to sell, furnish, offer, buy, serve or take intoxicating liquor, on the day before the election or on Election Day.
