An Impending 2 Peso Fare Increase

Commuters should brace themselves for another increase in jeepney fares IF the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board approve a P2 hike petition filed by 2 transport groups.

The Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO) and Pangkalahatang Sangguniang Metro Manila and Suburbs Association (Pasang Masda) joined forces by asking for additional 2 pesos in the basic minimum fare and .50 centavos more for every suceeding kilometer. They say that they are forced to do so due to the high prices of fuel, spare tires and parts, lubricants and batteries. But some groups think that this is not the right time to ask for an increase, saying they understand how some of their countrymen are still recovering from their losses brought about by the severe weather disturbance that hit most parts Luzon. According to the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytors Nationwide or PISTON and National Center for Commuter Safety and Protection, they would rather want the government to control oil prices than ask for a fare hike.
