The streets may be a bit quieter than it is today and public utility vehicles (PUVs) may become friendlier to the eye as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) proposes the ordinance against deafening horns and the eyesore “burloloy” jeepneys.
The MMDA will be submitting an ordinance against buses and other vehicles with loud horns plying the metro streets in the next conference set with the Metro Manila Council.
The idea of submitting this ordinance came after the MMDA was flooded with complaints from residents of private villages in the areas near Edsa. The residents complained of noise pollution, citing buses who indiscriminately honk their loud horns to get passengers at intersections.
The MMDA suggests that to provide immediate response, the traffic enforcers will be given the order to crush and destroy the horns of apprehended buses.
He reasoned in a report that the drastic move is necessary since leaving it to the owners will only prolong the process of replacement.
The bureau will also be suggesting that excessive and fancy decorations or burloloys and other unnecessary accessories on vehicles be prohibited.
It was cleared that accessories like fog lights, spot lights and other similar things that are totally dispensable for vehicles in the city should be removed and banned.
If the ordinance would be approved, the only vehicle type that would be allowed to have loud horns are the trucks and buses that travel provincial routes as these are mainly used in highways. Private vehicles will also be subjected to the loud horn blowing restriction if ever.
