The 17-year old Light Rail Transit-1 (LRT-1) is aiming to double its passenger load this year to have room for some 40, 000 commuters more every hour.
Currently, the LRT-1 that runs from Baclaran in the south end to Monumento in the north end, transporting 27, 000 commuters in an hour.
To compliment the commitment of the Arroyo administration to provide affordable and efficient transportation means, the Light Rail Transit Administration (LRTA) has been planning to upgrade their system and even their coaches.
The mass transit built with Belgian technology has been deteriorating with natural wear and tear. And as stated in reports, the LRTA admits that they are having difficulty nowadays in refurbishing their coaches and systems since spare parts are outdated and are no longer available in the market.
However, to do this system upgrade, they would have to earn more revenue. And doubling their passenger capacity is one way of increasing their income.
Last year the LRTA earned about 1.519-billion-pesos as posted in total.
