Get ready for a new commuting experience with the electric jeepneys or e-jeepneys.
The director and general manager of the Philippine Utility Vehicle Inc. or PhUV is proud to announce that the Land Transportation Office or the LTO has approved the registration of the e-jeepneys.
But these electrically powered jeeps are allowed to run on primary roads only and not along highways or expressways.
The LTO will issue orange plates for these environment-friendly vehicles which are now classified as low speed vehicles with a maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour.
E-jeepneys cost 625,000 pesos a unit, while reconditioned diesel engine jeepneys cost from 700,000 to 800,000 pesos, depending on how many passengers it can carry.
For the meantime, owners will have to charge the batteries of their e-vehicles at home as the PhUV is planning to construct a charging station near the fire station in Makati City.
According to the president of PhUV Ferdie Santos, they are also planning the conversion of diesel and gasoline run vehicles to electric vehicles.
PhUV is an association composed of the members of the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP) and the Green Renewable Independent Power Producers Inc. (GRIPP).
