The Metro Rail Transit Authority General Manager Roberto Lastimoso expressed his conern with the overloading of the MRT trains now that the new fare hike has been imposed and oil prices continue to surge weekly.
Lastimoso says commuters taking the MRT have tripled over the past few weeks especially during rush hour. The Metro Rail is still considered as the fastest mode of transport in the country with the cheapest fares now that commuters and even vehicle owners are finding ways to cope with the effects of high fuel prices.
To keep trains in tiptop shape, the MRT management will be implementing inspections on their trains and the tracks for preventive maintenance and possible repairs.
To accommodate commuters now taking the MRT EDSA line from Quezon City until Pasay City, the MRTA will extend its peak hour period by providing additional trains starting this Monday.
Lastimoso says the new peak hour period is from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. from the original 7 a.m. to 9:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Light Rail Transit Authority assured the public yesterday that there will be no increase in LRT and MRT fares.
