Vehicle owners have something to smile about for now: oil companies rolled back their prices by P1 effective today while commuters will have to brace themselves for a fare increase.
But the rollback will only benefit those who own gasoline-run vehicles while the diesel prices remain high at almost 54 pesos a liter.
Meantime, new bus fares will be officially implemented tomorrow, with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board announcing that the basic fare for ordinary buses will increase by P10 for the first five kilometers and P1.95 for each succeeding kilometer. Patrons of airconditioned buses will have to shell out extra P12 for the first five kilometers and P2.35 for the following kilometers.
The new basic fare for jeepneys and the P10 tip for taxis will be implemented on Monday. Basic fare for PUJs will now be P8.50 with an additional 25 centavos per succeeding kilometer.
But the LTFRB advises the public that PUVs should have the new fare matrix stickers or notices inside their vehiucles and should be visible to commuters, adding that it would be illegal for drivers to charge the new fares without these.
Despite the clamor for fare hike, the Light Rail Transit Authority announced that there is no fare increase for both LRT and MRT, saying that they are following the orders from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to maintain the current fares for the LRT 1 and 2 and MRT 3.
